Firefly

Firefly

An NHS Mental Health Maze Minigame

Firefly is a maze game built for the National Health Service's Mental Health branch Hopewood. The game is about navigating a maze while collecting Fireflies to open doors, repair bridges using cobwebs and to collect flame bugs to destroy obstacles such as fallen trees.

Role –

My role during the production of Firefly was to be the sole UI Designer for the project, and my responsibilities for this role were:

  • To design a unique simple gameplay UI that is easy to understand.
  • To design a unique simple main menu that is easy to understand.
  • To design a unique simple help menu with easy to understand language explaining gameplay mechanics.

Challenge

As Firefly is a minigame found on the new NHS Hopewood Mobile App, there isn’t too much room for an expansive UI because of this I found that simpler UIs found in games such as Fallout 76, Division 2 and Life is Strange: Before the Storm have simple UI’s that don’t overcrowd the screen and or too confusing for players to understand.

Much of my time working on the project was spent on design certain aspects such as the help menu or the main menu and getting it to fit with the overall aesthetic of the game.
